Bigotry - 1

I saw the movie Metro recently - was a great movie, overall. Irrfan Khan and Konkona were really good, made the movie worth watching!

Spoiler Warning- Anyone who cares about waching the movie, dont read this post, its got half the story. For those who already have read it before - sorry!

However I'm not the type to write movie reviews and stuff, far from it actually. What struck me in the movie, however, was the kind of attitude displayed by Shilpa's husband, the character Ranjeet (Kay Kay Menon) in the movie.
First of all, he's having an afair with a 20-something in his office, and been sleeping with her for a long time. This causes him no qualms at all, in fact he thinks he deserves it, blaming Shilpa for his unhappiness in marriage. So, far, still ok. Later in the movie, he thinks that Shilpa has come to know about the affair. Now he starts acting up, says sorry, asks her to forgive him, says it was 'just a mistake', and claims that since there was no emotional involvement, everything is fine!! Even now, you might be tempted to give him the benefit of doubt, thinking that he is truly repentant. Shilpa however, had no idea of all this, and she had been upset about something else - her own attraction towards another guy. She now says pretty much the same things that Ranjeet had said, with the difference that her 'affair' consisted only of meting that guy over a few weeks. At this, Ranjeet flares up, and starts accusing her of anything and everything, saying he will not tolerate this kind of behaviour, No matter that just a few minutes ago, he was begging her forgiveness for the same kind of, or probably a graver 'mistake'. His huge male ego hurt, he storms out of the house. It's bad enough at this point, but typical Indian male behaviour nonetheless.
Later, when the chick decides to leave him (as obviously she should have long back, since he was just using her anyways ) he now comes back to his wife, expecting an open armed welcome!! What a chauvinist pig! The bad part is, Shilpa really takes him back into her life, choosing 'marriage' over Shiny Ahuja, the guy she had a kinda affair with. Why she does that, was beyond me... I suppose the whole 'Indian Marriage' should survive kinda thing.
And the point is, so many guys still have this warped definition of loyalty, what is expected from a woman is so totally different from what's expected from a man! Totally sucks...

heyyyy i agree with u upto the point of where indian male mentality is concerned..but i think that the the end point of shilpa's gave her character more strength nd she ws the one who truely epitomises typical indian female..it ws her who came out as a winner..i mean male mentality is disgusting no doubt abt that..but dnt u thnk that they hv shown the true picture of how things are accepted by females in todays scenario????

I agree with the last sentence in above comment! In fact I wanted to convey the same thing when I said "Pan kadachit asahi asel ki film real-life shi related banavli asalyane tyanni tasa shevat thevla asel. Bharataat film madhye dakhavlyapramane paristhti asel tar ascharya vaatu naye, pan don't know really."

(I know, it is you who should be replying to comments, but u know... couldn't resist myself again! :D)

(And may I ask, why there is such unanimity among "typical indian females" as far as repugnance about "indian male mentality" is concerned???!!! :P )

I assume, that Bigotry - 1, will be followed by some other post, that will give a slightly less biased pov :P
point being that, while I largely agree with what the above comments say, theres more.
Ranjeet is just 1 of the 5 leading male characters in the movie, other 4 being played by - Sharmin Joshi, Dharmendra, Irfan Khan & Shiney Ahuja. While, each may have had a lapse of judgment, they treat women fairly.
U have little to say, about Kangana Ranaut & her ways of sleeping up the office hierarchy. Or, of the innumerous females, who are shallow in judging Irfan. Or, of Shiney Ahuja's wife - who leaves him because he isn't successful enough!
If you say, that 20% of the males are rotten, I would say, there are more - but not as drastic as you paint the picture :P

Had it been, 'Life in a Village' - I would have pleaded lack of knowledge but com'on lets be fair - not all men are as draconian as Kay Kay & not all women are paragons as Shilpa Shetty.

i saw this movie, which was being touted as the best movie ever made...human emotions...blah blah...but i found it to be very sad and depressing

what i found surprising was a friend of my,whos a girl, said the same thing to me...kinda strange!...i didnt even see the ending...i fell asleep! :)

points to be taken into consideration is that...
he was working in a call center...so his social life is anyways screwed...he would be meeting only his CC colleagues all the time... still no excuse to fall for some girl at work when you are married!

secondly, i think they had a kid....so it made much more sense for Shilpa to take him back....

relationships are anyways weird...theres no one solution for it...sometimes you have to hold on...sometimes you have to let go!

and whats all the gaga about "typical indian male"....oooooooo.....that hurts so bad!

mard ka dard koi nahi smajahta!!! :|

@Vedhas : english madhye post lihili asel...tar english madhech comment kelele baare aste ;)

If anyone ever comes back to see me reply here :P -
@Vedhas : Yeah , prob I thought too much abt it at that time!
@Juilee - That was exactly my point - it shows the situation as it is today, which isn't too right...
@Shantanu - Yeah it was an extremist pov, and yeah, it isn't one which I parade often, but seeing the film had made me feel all these things then. And while what you say about the female characters is true nonetheless, it doesn't make what Ranjeet did any less unfair.
@ck - well the whole typical male mentality is probably slightly overrated, but you surey can't deny that this kind of bigotry is still widespread..
